Chengdu Second People’s Hospital (CDSPH) is a national class A of the third grade hospital, integrating clinical treatment, education, scientific research, rehabilitation, prevention and health care. Founded in 1892 by Canadian Christian missionaries, it was ever named Sishengci Renji Hosptal, as the earliest western medicine and red cross hospital in western Sichuan. Having always insisted on the century-old Renji tradition of “serving diligently and carefully, holding high medical ethics”, CDSPH strive to upgrade the medical expertise, service quality, education and research level and to improve the doctor-patient relations. The whole staff are sparing no effort to promote the fast development of hospital with special characteristics, and to build a modernized high-quality medical center in Chengdu. Over recent years, CDSPH has won many honorable titles such as “Model Staff Home” by All-China Federation of Trade Unions, “Best Recommended Hospital” by Sichuan Province, “Leading Hospital in Health Ethics Building” by the nationwide health system and title of national “Hospital with Best Reform and Innovative Practices”, etc.
The precursor of the hospital was the evangelical hospital (Fuyin Hospital in Chinese, and successively called Renji Hospital, Sichuan Red Cross Evangelical Hospital and Sishengci Hospital) set up in 1892 by Omar L. Kilborn(1867-1920), a doctor and missionary of the Canadian Methodist Church. As the earliest general western medicine hospital in western Sichuan, it embraced a long list of prestigious specialists, including Dr. Omar L. Kilborn, Dr. Retta Gifford Kilbom, Lin Ze, Qi Shounan, Dong Bingqi, Yang Jialiang, Wu Jieping, Wu Yingkai, Zhang Guanghan, Yang Zhenhua and Weng Zhilong, etc.
In 1914, the hospital became the main educational practice base for the newly-established School of Medicine of West China Union University (WCUU), and in 1937 the main clinical teaching and practice base for the united hospital of WCUU, Medicine School of Nanjing Central University, and Medicine School of Shandong Cheeloo University. The latter two moved to Chengdu when the Anti-Japanese War broke out in 1937.
In 1950, the hospital was taken over by the Military Control Commission of Chengdu City and was reorganized in July as the Second West Sichuan Hospital by some of the leading experts from Minzhong Hospital, the field army of Shansi-Suiyuan Military Region. It was renamed CDSPH in 1952.
Another name, Chengdu Red Cross Hospital was authorized in 1988. In the same year, Chengdu Prevention and Treatment Research Institute for Skin Disease and Venereal Disease was founded based on the original dermatological department of CDSPH. The center was later renamed Research Institute of Skin Disease and Venereal Disease of Chengdu City in 2002.
Since 1992, CDSPH has successively become the teaching hospital for West China Medical Center of Sichuan University, North Sichuan Medical College and Zunyi Medical College.
In 1999 CDSPH was approved by the Ministry of Health of the People’s Republic of China to be a national class A of the third grade hospital.
In 2006, another name, Chengdu Affiliated Hospital of Zunyi Medical College was authorized to CDSPH. The same year witnessed the establishment of Chengdu Rehabilitation Center for Industrial Injured Workers, based on the original department of rehabilitation medicine. And the center served as a branch center for the wounded in the 2008 earthquake.
Also in 2008, CDSPH merged Chengdu Eighth People’s Hospital and transformed it into its Caoshijie Branch.
In 2010, another name, the Third Chengdu Affiliated Clinical School of Chongqing Medicine University, was authorized to add to CDSPH.
In 2012, the newly-built Rende Building was put into use, covering an area of over 50,000 square metres.
In 2013, CDSPH was officially authorized to administrate Qingbaijiang People’s Hospital.
The current CDSPH consists of the headquarters and Caoshi Branch, covering a total area of 22,613.58 m² and a service area of 93,747.85m². The hospital has a total staff of 1892, among whom there are 1551 clinical members (accounting for 81.97% in all staff). CDSPH has 34 staff members with senior titles, 244 members with vice-senior titles, 22 members with Doctor’s degree, 230 with Master’s degree, 5 members enjoying special government allowances of the municipal government. CDSPH has 18 first-class clinical departments, 10 technological departments and 16 functional departments. There are altogether 69 clinical specialties and 16 medical technological specialties at the hospital. At present, there are 1450 approved sickbeds at CDSPH.
CDSPH boasts a series of key medical subjects and specialties at different levels: Dermatological Department is a provincial Class A key specialty, opening 14 specialists out-patient such as eczema and vitiligo, establishing a difficult skin disease consultation base, laboratory, laser medical cosmetology room, therapeutic room; Burn and Plastic Surgery Department and Cardiovascular Intervention is a provincial Class A key subject (under construction); Respiratory Department is a provincial Class B key subject (under construction);Dermatological Department,Burn and Plastic Surgery,Hepatic-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery and Interventional Radiology are municipal level key subjects; Rehabilitation is municipal level key subject (under construction);Neurosurgery and Orthopedics are hospital level key subjects. Chengdu Prevention and Treatment Research Institute for Skin Disease and Venereal Disease , Chengdu Burn Research Institute and Chengdu Rehabilitation Research Center are based in CDSPH. CDSPH founds Cardiovascular Specialist Zhang Tingjie Studio, Respiratory System Diseases Research Room, Senile Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disease Research Room, Minimally Invasive Surgical Operation Cooperation Group, Renji Plastic Surgery Department, Spinal Cord Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center, etc.
CDSPH is well equipped with imported medical LA, CT, MRI, digital subtraction angiography X-ray machines and other large-scale modern equipment.
As an indirect subordinate affiliated hospital to both Chongqing Medical University and Zunyi Medical College, CDSPH is also the clinical education base for North Sichuan Medical College, Chengdu Medical College and Chengdu University of TCM, the Standardization Training Base for Resident Physicians of Sichuan Province, Chengdu General Practitioners Training Base. The Internal Medicine, Surgical Department and Dermatological Department offer cooperative postgraduate training programs together with Zunyi Medical College.
